E.Y.E. is a one man extravaganza/performance artist. He plays on top of pre-recorded drums, rhythm guitar and backup vocals. E.Y.E.’s name at birth was Steve Sharp and he has been performing since 1980. E.Y.E. provides his audience with eye-catching rock-n-roll stances and creatively stimulating remakes of rock-n-roll classics such as “Head Like A Hole” and “Spicoli’s Theme”. E.Y.E. also adds in a few of his own tunes to the set.
E.Y.E. started playing music at age 10 when he learned to play the Ukulele (spell it correctly for me Grog dammit!). By the time he was 12, he learned to play the drums and the guitar. E.Y.E. has been playing ever since. You can catch E.Y.E. at Canal Street Tavern, the Trolley Stop or Martina’s in Beavercreek. I highly recommend seeing E.Y.E. because he is one of the most creative artists to perform in Dayton in quite a while and he claims his E.Y.E. t-shirts are aphrodisiacs.
Why E.Y.E.?: I am E.Y.E., Express Yourself Excellently.
What instruments do you play?: Guitar, drums(drums are my life), bass playing is dreamed up out of nowhere and stolen from Lonesome Dave, and I play keyboards.
What’s your favorite musical stance?: I really want to swing the guitar around my neck. I’m still working on that. I’m trying to be an acrobat on the guitar. I’m known for beating the guitar because I beat the drums for 30 years.
Where did you get your ideas for pre-recorded music in your act?: Dave and I got together in 1980. He wanted to play the soundman and I played instruments. Since Dave left, I had to turn myself into the engineer, soundman, musician and songwriter.
Why do you refer to “we” in your performances? When you are only one person on stage: It’s actually just me. I always say we because Dave and I had been playing together since 1992. Our last gig was in Piqua in 1997. I’m just used to saying “we”.
Originals vs. Covers: I try to do more originals. Some of the covers I do are “Head Like A Hole”, “Disneyland”, “Everything’s Zen”, “Nothing Else Matters” and “Tubthumping”. I like to do both. I fell off the table at C.S.T. doing “Strokin”. I don’t do “Freebird”.
Favorite Quote: I’ll get scared when they start digging through my trashcans.
Musical inspirations: Berlin because of Terri Nunn’s hair. Mix the Beach Boys with the Who and you have E.Y.E.
Musical goals: I’m working on the fourth E.Y.E. album. (The previous three albums are entitled Let’s Get It On Up, Bandit, and True Positions.) I might even throw some country music on it. I’d like to be rich, but I don’t think I’ll ever be rich.
Musical hero: Terri Nunn of Berlin.
Hairstyle: Like Terri, E on one side, Y in the back, and the other E dyed on the other side of my hair, or one side dyes white or the other dyed black. (Note: Yes, he’s had all these hair styles)
Favorite disco song: The Bee Gee’s singing “Jive Talking”, “Saturday Night Fever”, “Staying Alive” and “You Should Be Dancing”.
High School: I attended Kiser Slautern in Germany, I’m a military brat.
High school memory: My first love, Vanna Fushs. She wrote me a dear John letter, other than that she was the best.
Hobbies: Drawing, I like to paint. I’m a water color/acrylic artist. I like Bob Ross. I like to travel too. I’ve been to Germany, England and Holland.
Thoughts on abortion: That’s up to the person’s involved. If they want to have the baby, they have the baby. Nobody should bring a child into this world if they don’t want to. I can’t discriminate against another person. It should be free. That’s what America is all about.
Pee Wee Herman or Emo Phillips?: Emo Phillips.
Pastel, neon or traditional?: Fluorescent.
Special abilities: I can do something that I thought all guys could do, but I found out only a few select few could. I’ll let you use your imagination.
Nicknames: Spiderman Steve, Two Face, Many Faces and the Flying Dutchman.
Favorite hair product: Clairol Frost & Glow.
If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?: Johnny Quest.
Advice: Express Yourself Excellently. Treat yourself like gold.
