(Originally appeared in Mutant Renegade Zine #9, Fall 1998)
Rob Wagner is the latest victim of Dead Beat Corner. Rob is the guy with pulled back long hair who provides the audience at Canal Street Tavern and various other places in the Dayton area with a dynamic mix of sounds. Rob graduated from Centerville High School in the greatest year, 1985 of course. As well as working at Canal Street Tavern, Rob works at various shows in Dayton through Sound Force. He creates sound at Fraze Pavilion and he works at Sound System Rentals. In the Summer he works up to 70 hours a week. To say the least he’s in demand. So say hello to Rob at the next show you attend and always remember and never forget Rob’s favorite beverage is Beck’s Dark. So buy the soundguy a beer at the next show.

The journey into Rob’s brain begins…
Nicknames: Rob-O, Robo-Cop, and Wags.
High School memory: Leaving for the last time.
What happened to that ’68 Mustang you used to have in H.S.?: It’s in my Dad’s garage.
What attracted you to do sound at shows?: I always loved speakers.
What was the best show at Canal Street you provided sound for?: Arlo Guthrie, because I was able to make it sound like it was Arlo right in front of you.
What was the most challenging show?: Wyatt Rice. I had to stay in the room after we exchanged words because of the feedback problem he was creating.
Wildest thing you have seen on the job: Band members screaming at each other on stage and eventually one of the members will leave the stage while the band continues to play. I’ve seen a few bands break up this way.
Wildest thing you’ve done at work: I about made a band break=up by kicking out the keyboardist, because he started to tell me that I always give him a hard time. He ended up yelling at me and I told him to leave if he didn’t like the conversation.
Bitchiest performer: Chris Williamson who is a singer / songwriter who acts one way on stage and is completely different after the audience leaves. Nothing is ever right, no matter what.
What do you do on your day off?: If I had a day off I’d disappear in the woods.
What would you do if you were invisible for a day?: I’d play tricks on my friends. I’d make them think that they were losing their minds.
Best pick up line: A woman was sitting at the bar drinking a Jack and Coke and the man sitting next to her says, “The next draft is on me”.
Favorite disco song: I used to hang out at the Bus Stop.
Religion: I hate religious questions.
Last performer you listened to: Blood Oranges.
Hobbies: Electronic fix-it-dude.
Favorite Beverage: Beck’s Dark.
Things you have a rackin for: Clueless bands and people. People with Ja-Love which are good kind people.
Advice: Your job has to mean more to you than a way to pay the bills.
